Sesame Cabbage with Crispy Bacon Bits

I remember cabbage as a kid, the horrible smell it left from being over boiled, and generally tasted like it smelt! I feel UK cuisine has come a long way since those days, with a huge variety of culinary delights now available to all of us. Try this Sesame Cabbage as a tasty alternative...

Ingredients

1 Savoy cabbage
3 Rashers Smoked back bacon, fat removed, diced
1 tsp Sesame oil
Fry light

Method

  1. Cut the cabbage in half and remove the two halves of the heart with a small sharp knife.
  2. Slice the two halves into thin strips, including the harder stems!
  3. Place into a colander and rinse. Leave to drain a few minutes.
  4. Whilst the cabbage drains a little, add fry light to a pan and heat through before adding the bacon bits and frying until nice and crispy, don't worry about the base of the pan going brown!
  5. When crispy, start adding the cabbage from the colander, a little at a time, stirring it around to mix the bacon through. Continue this until all the cabbage has been added.
  6. Place a lid on the saucepan and cook the cabbage and bacon in the steam produced from the water you rinsed the cabbage in, no need to add any more water!
  7. Once the cabbage is cooked through and softened enough, add 1 teaspoon of sesame oil and stir through completely.
  8. Serve with whatever roast dinner, or other meal you are having!
